Outreach and Public Engagement

Our Outreach and Public Engagement Activities

At Space Exchange Switzerland (SXS), our mission is simple and clear: promote space in Switzerland across all generations. We believe that curiosity for space begins early, evolves over time, and stays with us throughout life. That’s why our outreach strategy acts on two levels

1) To inspire a broad public, we participate at major events across the country. From Fantasy Basel to the Air & Space Days in Lucerne and other national gatherings, we share the excitement of space science, exploration, and innovation with thousands of visitors every year.

2)   To deepen interests of those who want more, we run Space Clubs tailored to three different age groups, offering creative hands‑on activities that match each stage of learning and discovery. Space can be a hobby just like sports or music!

Together, these activities help us build a vibrant, inclusive, and future‑ready Swiss space

The Planet-Club

KIDS

Some children are fascinated by space at a very young age. However, many parents don’t feel competent to support them adequately and answer their thousands of questions. The Planet-Club invites children from 2nd to 4th grade to pursue space-themed activities from tinkering to observation and learn about opportunities and limits of using models to understand the world. Contents are based on existing space missions, the technologies involved and the data gathered.

At the Galaxy-Club, they are introduced to opportunities such a citizen science projects and data archives to start their own explorations. They learn how to use a telescope and start collecting their own data. They meet peers with similar interests as well as scientists and engineers who work in their fields of interests, for example during a lab visit.

Air and Space days- Transport Museum Lucerne

SXS has been actively involved in the Air & Space Days at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, offering hands‑on space activities that inspire young visitors and families. One of the themes of the most recent edition focused on cosmic weather and its influence on Earth, giving children a fun and educational way to explore how the Sun affects our planet. Kids even had the chance to build their own model of a solar eruption, turning complex astrophysical phenomena into a creative, tangible experience.

Astroedu.ch- handson activities for education to share

At astroedu.ch, we bring together people and institutions involved in astronomy and space education outside the traditional school setting. Members share their experiences on running public observatories, science centres, and space‑themed educational programmes, exchanging practical advice and inspiration. Our website also features a selection of hands‑on activities for space education, freely accessible to educators and enthusiasts. In addition to our annual meeting, we collaborate informally by visiting each other’s facilities, trying tested activities, and occasionally contributing to one another’s events — helping strengthen astronomy outreach across Switzerland.
