Outreach and Public Engagement
At Space Exchange Switzerland (SXS), we believe that interest in space can start early and continue throughout life. Our mission is to help make space part of everyday culture in Switzerland by creating experiences that spark curiosity, encourage learning, and bring people together.
Outreach is about sharing knowledge and creating connections between a field and the wider public. In the space sector, it means making space science, exploration, and technology accessible and exciting for everyone - not only for experts, but also for children, students, families, and anyone curious about the universe around us.
Throughout the year, we take part in major events across the country, including Fantasy Basel, the Air & Space Days in Lucerne, and other public gatherings where thousands of visitors can discover the world of space through discussions, activities, and interactive experiences. These events allow us to share the excitement of exploration and innovation with a broad audience in an accessible and engaging way.
For those who wish to go further, we also organize Space Clubs adapted to three different age groups. Through hands-on activities and creative projects, participants can explore space at their own pace and according to their interests. We believe that space can become a true passion and hobby, just like music, sports, or art.
By combining public outreach with longer-term educational activities, SXS hopes to contribute to a vibrant, inclusive, and future-oriented Swiss space community.
If you are organizing a space-themed event and are looking for speakers, workshops, or activities, we would be happy to help!
The Planet-Club
KIDS
Some children are fascinated by space at a very young age. However, many parents don’t feel competent to support them adequately and answer their thousands of questions. The Planet-Club invites children from 2nd to 4th grade to pursue space-themed activities from tinkering to observation and learn about opportunities and limits of using models to understand the world. Contents are based on existing space missions, the technologies involved and the data gathered.
Join a club - for a long term experience!
The Galaxy-Club
JUNIOR
Space enthusiasts from 5th to 9th grade already have a huge knowledge about their area of interest. At the Galaxy-Club, they are introduced to opportunities such a citizen science projects and data archives to start their own explorations. They learn how to use a telescope and start collecting their own data. They meet peers with similar interests as well as scientists and engineers who work in their fields of interests, for example during a lab visit.
The Cosmos Club
ADULTS- ( from 16 yers on)
This club is dedicated to both who have always been fascinated by the Universe and those who are just discovering the vastness of it, and like to do it together with other enthusiasts and proven experts. It offers a program featuring the latest space activities in Switzerland such as the search for live beyond our planet, space debris or the James Webb Telescope. There is scope for discussing the societal and philosophical implication of human activities in space. Those who wish to take it a step further have the opportunity to participate in citizen science.
Fantasy Basel - Pop culture meets space!
For several years now, SXS has been proudly present at Fantasy Basel, bringing space exploration closer to thousands of curious visitors. Once again, this unique pop‑culture festival is the perfect opportunity for all space enthusiasts to discover the richness of the Swiss space ecosystem and meet the many players shaping it. The space level of the Fantasy Basel is organized by the Swiss Space Museum with SXS, NCCR PlanetS, and SKACH.
Below, you can find a glimpse of our past editions and the vibrant activities we shared with the community.
Air & Space Days- Transport Museum Lucerne
SXS has been actively involved in the Air & Space Days at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, offering hands‑on space activities that inspire young visitors and families. One of the themes of the most recent edition focused on cosmic weather and its influence on Earth, giving children a fun and educational way to explore how the Sun affects our planet. During last edition in 2025, kids even had the chance to build their own model of a solar eruption, turning complex astrophysical phenomena into a creative, tangible experience.
Astroedu.ch- handson activities for education to share
At astroedu.ch, we bring together people and institutions involved in astronomy and space education outside the traditional school setting. Members share their experiences on running public observatories, science centres, and space‑themed educational programmes, exchanging practical advice and inspiration. Our website also features a selection of hands‑on activities for space education, freely accessible to educators and enthusiasts. In addition to our annual meeting, we collaborate informally by visiting each other’s facilities, trying tested activities, and occasionally contributing to one another’s events — helping strengthen astronomy outreach across Switzerland.
